Q. Can you cut shaped pieces?

A. Opticolour panels can be can be curved or shaped to accommodate cooker hoods and 'L' or 'T' shapes (i.e., where there is a change in height).
You may fit your extractor fan to the top of a curved or flat glass panel.
Q. How thick is Opticolour glass?

A. Opticolour splashbacks are made as standard from 6mm toughened glass. However, Opticolour glass is also available in 8mm, 10mm, 12mm, 15mm and 19mm thicknesses. These thicknesses are often used for shelves, tabletops, vanity tops and worktops.

Q. Can I fit Opticolour glass myself?

A. Fitting a single glass panel is easy, and we would recommend you do this yourself, with the silicone glue that we provide. However, when several glass panels need to be measured to fit together this is much more difficult. Unless you are an extremely competent DIYer, we would recommend that you employ a professional to measure and fit, or take advantage of our fitting service, when more than one panel is required.

If you are measuring yourself, we suggest you go to the trouble of making templates from 8mm MDF. If the templates fit, the glass will fit. From our own experience, we know that there are many pitfalls! Please see our instructions for measuring and templating.

Q. Does the wall need to be flat and in
Q. good condition?

A. The wall needs to be free of bows, twists or raised areas over approximately 2-3mm. Any sharp areas need to be sanded. Unevenness less than that depth can be taken up by the adhesive. All walls must be sealed using either PVA or emulsion paint.

The walls will be obscured by Opticolour so the surface does not need to look pretty.

Wiring must be chased into walls and any light fittings should be fitted allowing at least 10mm for the thickness of the glass.

Q. Can I fit Opticolour glass on top of
Q. my existing tiles?

A. We do not recommend this.

Q. How are the glass edges finished?

A. All external glass edges are polished.

Q. Do you supply upstands?

A. We do not supply upstands. Our minimum height is 250mm unless part of a larger job, e.g., under a window sill.

Q. Do you offer a supply only service?

A. Yes. We require templates or detailed drawings showing any socket cut-outs or holes for plumbing, etc. Templates must have straight edges other than a defined shape such as beneath a cooker hood. Please see our Single Splashback and Supply Only Page and our templating instructions. Completed orders will normally be delivered to you by carrier.

Q. Where can I see Opticolour Glass?

A. Please see our Where to See Opticolour Page for an ever growing list of shops that have samples of Opticolour glass and often full size displays as well.
Cut-outs for electrical sockets
Q. How much does Opticolour cost?

A. Opticolour glass is priced per square metre with additional costs for cutouts (or other glass processing) and installation. To obtain a quotation please see below.

Q. How do I obtain a quotation?

A. To obtain a quotation for our supply & fit service please see our measure and fit page. To obtain a quotation for supply only, please see our single splashbacks and supply only page.

Q. How do I pay for Opticolour?

A. Opticolour take a 20% payment when we book your appointment, 30% after we have measured and a final payment once the job is completed. We accept  most credit cards, debit cards and cheques. Trade accounts can be set up upon application.

Q. Do you make single splashbacks?

A. Yes, please see our single splashbacks page.

Q. Do you measure and fit?

A. Yes, please see our measure and fit page.

Q. Can I obtain actual samples of the
Q. coloured glass?

A. We are happy to send you samples, but we normally like to agree a job in principle first. If you would provide us with approximate sizes for your panels along with details of any cut outs for sockets or plumbing and any shapes, such as under the cooker hood, we will give you an idea of cost. If that is acceptable to you, then we will happily send you samples.

Q. What if I want a colour different from Q.  your samples?

A. We are able to mix colours to order, including sparkle and metallic effects, and will mix as  close to your sample as possible. We are able to mix all Ral, BS, Dulux, Farrow & Ball colours. We can  also mix bespoke colours if you send us  something to match

Please be aware that colours will look much shinier through glass, so will not necessarily look exactly the same as your paint. It is often safer to consider a slightly contrasting colour! For special colours and effects there is a modest mixing charge.

Q. Can I have holes or cut-outs in the
Q. glass panels?

A. Yes. Opticolour is specifically intended for kitchen splashbacks and shower walls so cut-outs for sockets and holes for shower fittings are not a problem, but must be cut in our workshop prior to toughening. Once toughened the glass cannot be cut or drilled.
Sockets Cut-outs for electrical sockets should generally be at least 50mm from the edge of the panel or from each other. If sockets are placed side by side the boxes must be placed so that the socket covers sit tight against one another. The sockets sit on top of the glass. Please ensure your electrician leaves plenty of wire so sockets can be fed through the glass.
Q. Is Opticolour heat resistant?

A. Yes the glass and coating are heat resistant and will not crack behind the hob. Please see our Toughened vs Untoughened Glass Page for more information.

Q. Is Opticolour safety glass?

A. Yes. All Opticolour panels are toughened glass to BS6206.
